Five outfit formulas to see you through the British summer

15 May 2025

We all know how unpredictable the British weather can be, especially in summer when we can experience all seasons in the space of a month. So we thought we’d make dressing a little easier for you by creating five outfit formulas that will work whether it’s sunny, rainy, cold or everything in between.

What to wear on a sunny day

There’s a reason linen is a bestseller for most brands in the summer. The fabric is breathable, stylish, and works on any number of clothing styles, from jumpsuits to waistcoats and trousers. On a sunny day though, you just can’t beat a linen dress. We love this sleeveless V-neck linen dress from Primark, which comes in this season’s must-have colour, khaki, as well as the more classic hues of black and beige. It will look great paired with these slingback sandals from Aldo, which have a discreet heel that adds height without compromising on comfort. Accessorise with a basket or crochet bag, some statement earrings and oversized sunglasses.

What to wear on a rainy day

It wouldn’t be a British summer without a little bit of rain! We love denim all year round, but it’s a great addition to your summer wardrobe and works well in the rain as it’ll keep you warm and dry fairly quickly. Double denim has been a huge trend on and off the catwalk this season, so why not try it? Try this denim tank top from Zara, paired with matching Jorts or wide leg jeans. If this look is too much for you, you can also layer a classic denim jacket over a jumpsuit. If it’s really pouring down, don’t forget to pack a pair of low wellies that you can swap for something dressier when you get to your destination.

What to wear on a cold summer day

There’s no need to let a cold day completely ruin your summer vibes. You can still be warm and look summery – the key here is layering. Why not wrap a summer knit around your shoulders to add a cosy touch to a classic t-shirt and linen trousers? Or you could throw a light jacket over a strappy top and skirt. Swap your sandals for some low top trainers and you’re good to go.

What to wear in the heatwave

On those rare days when temperatures soar above 30 degrees, choosing the right cut and fabric will make all the difference. A dress will be the most comfortable option, in a breathable fabric such as silk or poplin (the Gap dress we’ve included below is perfect for this, plus it was designed by Zac Posen and worn by Anne Hathaway so you can’t go wrong). Try a short style, or one with a wide skirt that allows movement to avoid chafing in the heat. A chic flip flop will finish off your look nicely, alongside a braided handbag and wide brimmed hat. The beauty of this look is that it works whether you’re in a sweltering city or on holiday.

What to wear on a windy day

No one wants to experience a Marilyn Monroe moment on a windy day, and while the royals have a special trick to avoid skirts being blown up in the wind (special weights sewn into the hem), it might be safer for you to avoid them altogether. A summer suit comprising a tailored vest and wide leg trousers is your safest bet, in a heavier fabric such as cotton or polyester that won’t ride up too much in the wind. To finish off your look, try pumps or ballerina flats, which are not only on trend, but will protect your feet from any flyaway dust and dirt. Our top handbag essential? Pretty clips that will keep your hair from blowing in your face.
